Title:Singing or Pruning?
Pages:109-114
Journal:Bible Translator
Volume:47
Issue:1
Abstract:Translators of Song of Songs must balance a text-critical and philological approach (pruning) with creative and artistic elements (singing). Rare Hebrew words, homonyms, and overlapping grammatical forms complicate the task. The target language has unique complexities. Examples: Swedish. Using the team of translators may bring balance between pruning and singing.

Journal:Svensk Exegetisk Årsbok
Volume:66
Abstract:"The OT in Swedish during the past century." The 1703, 1917, and 1999 Swedish translations of the OT are characterized and compared with regard to textual criticism, Hebrew philology, and Swedish style. The first was essentially a Swedish version of Luther's Bible, the second an uncritical translation of the Masoretic text, with the most recent being the first to rely on text-critical material and methods in an attempt to arrive at a Hebrew original which is as genuine as possible. Title:The Song of Songs in the Slavonic Bible Tradition
Pages:119-125
Journal:Bible Translator
Volume:47
Issue:1
Abstract:There are three functional types of biblical text in Slavonic: the liturgical (used in church services), continuous (all the verses of a book in conventional order), and the explanatory (biblical text plus commentary). All are highly literal translations. Traditions in favor of these texts must be overcome before more dynamic translations can be substituted. Examples from Song of Songs.
