Journal:Bible Translator
Volume:15
Issue:3
Abstract:Discusses translational problems with which workers have to deal in translating the sublimity of theological insights into a language whose background religious vocabulary is fundamentally animist. Three categories of problems are discussed: (1) God, the Names of God, and the attributes of God; (2) circumcision, sacrifice and worship; and (3) resurrection and the after-life. These are illustrated in the language context of Swahili and Kikuyu.

Title:The Meaning of the Qumran Scrolls for Translators of the Bible
Pages:1-8
Journal:Bible Translator
Volume:08
Issue:1
Abstract:Although the evidence at hand is incomplete the Qumran scrolls delineate some broad principles which will aid the translator in determining the best biblical text. Three principles are cited: (1) The scrolls confirm the reliability of the Masoretic text, thereby adding almost a thousand years to the antiquity of the Hebrew text; (2) they verify the Septuagint as a textual authority; (3) they provide evidence of the value and reliability of the scrolls in regard to variant readings.

Title:A New Translation Of the Torah: A Review
Pages:97-105
Journal:Bible Translator
Volume:14
Issue:3
Abstract:An extended review of the new translation of the first five books of the Bible as published by the Jewish Publication Society of America. While the translators show a high regard for the Masoretic text they have on occasion resorted to giving alternate translations for obscure passages, revocalized the text, made use of the versions, and they have utilized the latest archaeological and linguistic advances to produce a superior translation. A freshness of translation is achieved by using a crisp style, modernizing pronouns and using equivalent expressions. The Protestant reviewer detected little or no "Jewishness" in their work.
