Title:Translation of 'God' and 'Lord' in Some Naga Bibles
Pages:438-443
Journal:Bible Translator
Volume:43
Issue:4
Abstract:The first three Naga (India) translations used cultural terms for God. Though no term was entirely satisfactory, translators used the best term available and then supplemented with biblical teaching about God, thus making a bridge between the old and new religions. In translating YHWH, qualifying terms were used but readers of two translations borrowed a transliterated form, Jihova as a personal name for YHWH from the third tribe.

Title:Translating the Psalms
Pages:1-10
Journal:Bible Translator
Volume:17
Issue:1
Abstract:Translating the Psalms must appeal to a wide variety of usages, and no one version is likely to be suitable for all purposes. Discusses five particular questions and considers the difficulties they raise and the possible answers which may be explored: (1) the divine names; (2) verbal repetition; (3) paraphrase; (4) explanatory additions or modifications in translation; and (5) problems of metrical structure and division of the text.

Title:'Literal' and 'Free' Translations: A Proposal for a More Descriptive Terminology
Pages:181-209
Journal:Journal of Northwest Semitic Languages
Volume:23
Issue:1
Abstract:A. proposes more adequate terms to describe the nature of ancient translations, terms that focus on translator consistency: lexical consistency, consistency in use of word classes, and grammatical consistency in rendering nouns and adjectives, verbs, and pronouns. For the text critic, this kind of precision is more useful than "literal" and "free" for determining what readings lie behind the translations.
