Title:The Targums: Ancient Reader's Helps?
Pages:301-316
Journal:Bible Translator
Volume:36
Issue:3
Abstract:The Targums are not paraphrastic or interpretive; traditional material is inserted into a literally translated text. There is elaboration or alteration but never deletion. Examples: great sea monsters, handmade sanctuary. The Targums include mnemonic devices which in turn trigger a full sermon text.

Title:Recognising the Otherness of the Text: Avoiding Accommodation in Translation
Pages:314-325
Journal:Bible Translator
Volume:42
Issue:3
Abstract:Accommodation of a text arises when translators fail to recognize the radically different concerns of the biblical and modern worlds. Types of accommodation may include pious leveling, different systems of thought and expression, theological tendentiousness, foreign or offensive values, or the HOTTP. Translators must work to make foreign concepts intelligible while still allowing them to be foreign.
