Title:The Priestly Source Recovered Intact?
Pages:458-78
Journal:Vetus Testamentum
Volume:46
Issue:4
Abstract:The debate over the priestly source between Documentarians (P is an independent source) and Supplementarians (P is a set of corrrections to non-P) could be resolved by finding an ancient manuscript of P. Ezek 20:5-9 joins two fragments of P (Exod 2:23b-25 and Exod 6:2-9), preserving the Septuagint reading in Exod 2:25 which flows into Exod 6:2. However, the case for an independent P continues to rest primarily on (1) contradictions between P and non-P; (2) doublets; and (3) continuity of P when read without intervening non-P. Title:The APO of 2 Thessalonians 1:9 and the Nature of Eternal Punishment
Pages:201-11
Journal:Westminster Theological Journal
Volume:59
Issue:2
Abstract:The locative interpretation of apo in 2 Thess 1:9 is not as incontrovertible as some assume. The common adjectival force of the preposition, the OT background, and parallels from the NT and Pseudepigrapha support the causal interpretation, which is significant for understanding the author's eschatology. His view of divine wrath is active rather than passive. This interpretation weakens the use of this text to support a variety of annihilationist views. E. Fudge's attempt to blend both senses of apo is awkward. The proposed interpretation highlights the writer's close association of Christ with God. He applied Isa 2 concerning Yahweh to Christ and placed Christ center stage in Isaiah's Day of the Lord. This hints that the title kurios, applied to Christ six times in 2 Thess 1, bears its typical Septuagintal significance and serves as a title for Deity. (c) Religious and Theological Abstracts
