Title:Hosea 9:13 and Josephus, Antiquities IX, 277-287
Pages:103-08
Journal:Palestine Exploration Quarterly
Volume:123
Abstract:Hos 9:13 has presented both translators and commentators with textual and interpretational problems. Argues against the preference given to the LXX reading by pointing out problems with the Greek text. The MT swr should be read as sor and translated as "Tyre." This opens the possibility of using the noted portion of Antiquities to establish the historical context of the verse in question. (c) Religious and Theological Abstracts

Title:How Mighty Was the Mighty Minority?
Pages:93-105
Journal:Studia Theologica
Volume:49
Issue:1
Abstract:Discusses J. Jervell's thesis about the role of Jewish Christianity, agreeing with him on many basic assumptions. Suspects that the influence of the mighty minority was not so overwhelming as Jervell assumes. There are other ways to explain the legalistic, Judaizing tendencies in the 2nd and 3rd post-apostolic generations. According to Jervell, Jewish Christianity formed the center of the early church - a mighty minority. In J. Munck's view, primitive Jewish Christianity vanished at the fall of Jerusalem. While Munck was wrong in general, he correctly maintained that Jewish traits were caused by other factors - use of the LXX among Gentile Christians was important in re-Judaizing in the church. Substantiates this by analyzing relevant themes in the Epistle to the Hebrews. Possible political pressure from radical Jewish groups may have compelled the church to make accommodation to Judaism. Stress on such matters in Hebrews is due to the readers' inadequate understanding and use of the OT. This lack of insight made for Judaizing in spite of their not being Jews.
