Title:Matthew
Place:Grand Rapids, Michigan
Publisher:Zondervan
Abstract:Thorough introduction covers history of criticism of Matthew, history and theology, synoptic problem, unity, authorship, date, place of composition and destination, occasion and purpose, canonicity, text, themes and special problems, literary genre, bibliography, and structure and outline. Tends to review major issues quite well, then take a moderately conservative stance. NIV running text. Covers almost all translational concerns for exegesis very well, from discourse structure to finer details, word studies. Good background studies. Information not too difficult to retrieve. Excellent discussions sometimes use high-level terms, not always easy for a second-language English reader. Greek, Hebrew used but with clarification for the nonscholar. [Bound with Wessel on Mark and Liefeld on Luke.] (In: The Expositor's Bible Commentary 8, pages 1-599)

A conservative stance, based on careful research, which should elicit reactions from scholars; opts for son of Zebedee as author (with possible amenuensis). No running text, but utilizes NIV. Generally careful study of backgrounds, flow of text. Many details translators need may be missing. Faily clear level of expression. Greek seldom used directly, always explained.

Title:The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament. Vol 1
Place:Oxford
Publisher:Clarendon Press
Pages:xii, 684 pp.
Abstract:A scholarly classic, marked by all the virtues and weaknesses of turn-of-the-century scholarship. Each book is studied by a different scholar. At the top of the page is a translation, generally painfully literal. Below it are textual notes (in Tobit these occupy most of the page). The bottom of the page (most of the space) contains annotations of help to translators. The usefulness varies greatly from book to book; from virtually useless to quite helpful. Sometimes it proves to be a welcome resource. [Bullard]
